Lehigh Cement Co. wins Corporate Investment Award

Times-Mail

MITCHELL — Lehigh Cement Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lehigh Hanson Inc., was awarded the 2019 Corporate Investment and Community Impact Award in the Corporate Investment category for economic development at the Mitchell plant.
Presented by Trade & Industry Development, all CiCi Award recipients have developed detailed and compelling expansion, retention and relocation plans that were formed in collaboration with local economic developers and state entities. All projects have the full potential to make a measurable impact on the communities in which they have chosen to expand. The new Lehigh cement plant is one of only 15 Indiana projects to receive a CiCi Award in the program’s history, which was established in 2005.
“We credit Lehigh’s success in Indiana to the abundant natural resources and business-friendly environment as well as our commitment to the state and our long history and investment in the city of Mitchell,” said Tom Chizmadia, senior vice president of government affairs and communications for Lehigh Hanson. “By honoring these impactful projects, Trade and Industry Development continues to support economic development and strong communities around the U.S.”

For the 14th annual CiCi Awards, Trade & Industry Development honored 30 winners from 28 different companies, who contributed a total capital investment of nearly $20 billion for projects throughout the United States.
“We are honored that Lehigh’s new cement plant project in Mitchell is being recognized with this prestigious award,” said Jerry Miller, Mitchell plant manager. “Our dedication to this community has always been strong, and this investment promises a confident future.”
Last July, Lehigh announced plans to invest more than $600 million in a new cement plant in Mitchell, which will increase production capacity while significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions per ton of cement produced. The ground-breaking for the new plant is expected in the first quarter of 2020 with startup slated for the third quarter of 2022.
Notable economic and environmental benefits of the new Mitchell plant include:
• More than 50 new full-time jobs.
• More than 1,000 construction positions during construction.
• Technical training and growth opportunities for plant employees.

• State-of-the-art technology to improve operating efficiencies.
• Thermal efficiencies.
• Waste heat recirculation and utilization.
• Recycling and energy efficiencies.
